Veggie & Fruit Guide

Pineapple

Pineapples are made up of many flowers whose individual fruitlets fuse together around a central core. Each fruitlet has rough spiny marking on the pineapple's surface.

Pineapples have exceptional juiciness and a vibrant tropical flavour that balances the tastes of sweet and tart. They are second only to bananas as America's favourite tropical fruit.

There are two types of pineapple: the Queen and the Cayenne.

The Queen pineapple has a small fruit and is less juicy than Cayenne. It is more suitable for fresh consumption, the crown is more “prickly” and it is generally sweeter than the Cayenne.

The Cayenne pineapple is a larger, more cylindrical fruit and the flesh is light yellow. The fruit is very juicy and does not store well. It is more suited for canning and juicing purposes, but also has a pleasant taste.
