Onions

There is very little that can stir up an appetite more than the delicious pungent smell of onions browning. More than just a vegetable, the onion is a culinary necessity that is used for its flavour in almost every type of cuisine under the sun. One of the oldest vegetables, today onions are one of the world’s leading vegetable crops and are available in many different forms making meal preparation easier than ever before. Onions may bring a tear or two to your eyes, but they will certainly bring joy to your palate and good health to your body!


Serving Size
 
½ a cup of chopped/sliced onion (raw) provides 1 serve of vegetables.
 
Onions are more frequently eaten as part of a dish than on their own and so they can be counted towards a serving of your 5-a-Day (together with other vegetables used in the meal) even if you don’t eat a full serving of onion in one meal.


Seasonal Availability & Description by Variety
 
Different varieties of are available at different times of the year (see below), but considering all varieties, onions are available all year round. 


Brown Onions

Yellow flesh, lasting flavour, best for slow cooking dishes such as stews and soups.


 Availability: All year round.

 
Red Onions
Sweeter, best raw and served thinly sliced in sandwiches and salads.

Availability: All year round.


White Onions
Pearly, white fleshed onions that are crisp and sweet with a strong flavour. Used raw or cooked.

Availability: December to April.
Shallots
Red to brown small pointed onions that taste mild, sweet with a taste of garlic. Use raw or cooked to subtly flavour dishes.
Pickling Onions
Small onions cooked or roasted whole and suitable for pickling.
