Horseradish

Pungent horseradish is a member of the Brassicaceae family, which also includes mustard, wasabi, broccoli, and cabbages.

The horseradish plant is grown mainly for the root, although the young and tender leaves may be chopped finely and added to salads.

The strong flavour of this root has an underlying sweetness and seems more like garlic than a spice.

Horseradish sauce began to be used as an accompaniment to roast beef in Brittan in the nineteenth century. It is also one of the bitter herbs eaten at Passover.

Seasonal Availability

Fresh horseradish is available in March, April and September.

Serving Size

Because horseradish is most often used as a seasoning in the form of horseradish sauce, it is unlikely that plain horseradish would be eaten in a quantity adequate to count as one vegetable serving.  It can however be combined with other vegetables to count towards your 5-a-Day.
