Grapefruit

Before it became popular in the late 19th century, grapefruit was only grown as an ornamental plant.

This subtropical citrus fruit derived its name from the way it grows on the tree - clustered like bunches of grapes. Grapefruit don’t ripen after being harvested - they ripen completely on the tree.

Two varieties are available in South Africa, namely Star Ruby (red or pink fleshed) and Marsh (white fleshed).

Seasonal Availability

The Star Ruby variety is available from May to October, while the Marsh variety is available from May to September.

Serving Size

Half a peeled grapefruit (90g) provides one serving of fruit.
