Edamame
Edamame beans are fresh baby soya beans,
available in Japanese markets and restaurants. The
edible portions of this plant are the beans inside the pod and the
name means 'beans on a branch'.
Edamame beans have a sweet, nutty flavour.
Edamame is consumed as a snack, a vegetable dish, used in soups or processed
into sweets.
Outside East Asia, the dish is most often found in Japanese
restaurants and some Chinese restaurants, but has also found popularity
elsewhere as a healthful food item.
Seasonal Availability
Soya beans are planted
during the summer months, with the optimal planting times
around October until January and harvest during May until
July.
Serving Size
Half a cup (90g) of cooked green soya beans provides 1
